IT was birthday cake all round at Flamingo Land as the park’s three Sumatran tiger cubs celebrated their first birthday.

Far from the usual Victoria sponge and fondant icing though, Kuasa, Mentari and Bulan were given meat in cardboard boxes disguised as cake.

The cubs were born on March 22 last year to mum Surya and dad Bawa and opened their eyes just over two weeks later before being named in May.

On May 21, the young cubs met the public for the first time as they were given access to the outside area of their enclosure.

Throughout June the tigers made continuous progress as they were observed eating meat for the first time and had their second visit to the vet having all put on weight.

In January this year they were introduced to the pond in their enclosure.

Across the weekend, which was the opening weekend of the new season at the theme park and zoo, visitors could colour in a birthday message for the cubs and stick it on the tiger bridge above their enclosure.
