AN open and honest relationship and never arguing about money is the key to a happy marriage, according to one Norton couple.

Amy and Charlie Goodchild, of Burdale Close, celebrated 60 years of marriage last Thursday and the couple, who moved to Ryedale 20 years ago, attribute it to never keeping secrets from each other.

Amy, 82, said: “The secret to our marriage is that we have never kept secrets from one another.

“We have always been open and honest with one another, even from the very beginning.

“We have never argued over money because it’s not my money, it’s not his money, but it’s our money.”

The couple, who are originally from Ascot, met on a bus travelling through Staines in Middlesex when they were going to the cinema and romance blossomed soon after.

Amy said: “It was a thing we did on a Saturday night, I went with my girlfriends and he went with his friends.

“We started going out and courted for four years. He lived at one side of Ascot race course and I lived at the other side.”

Amy and Charlie, 85, married in 1955 at 2pm in Ascot on what they said was a lovely sunny day before they enjoyed a honeymoon in Bristol. They have one son, Keith, 59, who was a Life Guard in the Household Cavalry, and two grandsons, aged 22 and 19.

The couple celebrated in Ascot the weekend before their anniversary and enjoyed continued celebrations with family and friends at their home in Norton, along with a special delivery of a card from the Queen.
