RESIDENTS in Malton, Norton and Old Malton are invited to attend a drop-in session to find out about the work done so far on solutions to tackle flooding in the area.

A multi-agency flood group, which has been meeting since 2012 to look at the emergency response to flooding in the area, commissioned a flood study, which models the causes of flooding in four affected locations.

The study draws on anecdotal evidence from people living in the area, as well as technical data from agencies such as Yorkshire Water, the Internal Drainage Board, North Yorkshire County Council, Ryedale District Council, the Highways Authority and the Environment Agency.

The drop-in session, which is being held at the Milton Rooms, in Malton, on Wednesday, March 18, from 12.30pm to 7pm, will give residents a chance to find out about the next steps with officers working on the project.

Following the drop-in event, the study will conclude with a range of solutions which have been subject to cost-benefit analysis.

These will be presented to the Ryedale Area Committee on June 10.

The outcomes from the study can then be used in bids for government funding by relevant agencies and local communities.

County Councillor Gareth Dadd, North Yorkshire’s executive member for environmental service, said: “The flooding of 2012 caused considerable disruption and distress in the area and this flood study has come out of a great deal of discussion, consultation, evidence gathering and data evaluation by the agencies since that time.

“We hope therefore that people will come to talk to officers about the study in order to understand the next steps to be taken.”
