A PRIMARY school classroom was evacuated after a child threw chairs at teachers and threatened one with a pair of scissors, it is understood.

The incident, which took place on Monday at Leyburn Primary School, in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, was later reported to the police.

According to one parent whose child was in the class at the time, the pupil threatened a teacher with a pair of scissors before throwing chairs at two teachers trying to restrain him.

The parent said: "The other children saw the boy take a pair of scissors from his pencil case and then threaten the teacher. He then threw two chairs at them.

"I think parents are quite concerned about the safety of their own children, although we've been told the situation is being dealt with."

North Yorkshire County Council confirmed that an incident took place at the school.

A spokeswoman said: "No pupil or member of staff was hurt in the incident and children are safe at the school.

"The safeguarding of children is a top priority for schools and the county council.

"The local authority is working closely with Leyburn primary to look at a range of options to ensure that the needs of all children in the school are met.”

North Yorkshire Police said the incident was reported to officers when they attended the school on an unrelated matter yesterday (Tuesday).

A spokesman said the issue was discussed with the boy's parents and the headteacher, and the school was dealing internally incident.
