SEVERAL people have shown interest in taking over the tenancy of the newly restored Malton Town Hall, says its owners, Fitzwilliam Malton Estate.

Leading upmarket restaurant companies including Carluccios and Patisserie Valerie are being targeted, the estate has revealed.

The iconic landmark Grade 2 listed building in the heart of the Market Place, is being offered with a guide rent of £50,000 a year says Tobias Burckhardt, the estate surveyor.

"Our aim with the Town Hall regeneration is to create a destination leisure development and draw shoppers to the town centre. The type of occupier we are targeting - a regionally or nationally recognised brand - will have a positive effect on the tenant mix in the Market Place without necessarily taking trade away from existing businesses. Carluccios, Zissi, Ask or Patisserie Valerie are the level of operators we are mainly targeting."

Leisure property specialists, Fleurets, have been helping the estate to find a suitable operator for the flagship property, said Mr Burckhardt.

The Town Hall which for many years was the home of Malton Museum, has 3,230 sq ft over two floors. "Many of its original features have been retained, reflecting the heritage and character of the impressive building. Local craftsmen, including skilled stonemasons, have helped with the transformation."

Mr Burckhardt added: "Hopes are high that a tenant will be found soon. The estate is hopeful that a suitable applicant will be inspired by the building now we are in the New Year."

Finding a new role for the Town Hall is one of the keys to the Fitzwilliam Estate's aspirations for the regeneration of Malton town centre. The upmarket retail chain, Booths, based in the North West, has entered into negotiations with the estate to open a store in Malton, which, said Mr Burckhardt, would form the anchor of a town centre retail development on the livestock market site.

"The estate's investment in Malton is aimed at helping the town centre compete in the 21st century. There have been numerous refurbishments and extensions of retail units and business premises, the most striking being the £4 million investment in the refurbishment of the Talbot Hotel."
