A MUSEUM in Thirsk has bid a fond farewell to a long- serving volunteer, who is retiring after 16 years helping at the centre.

Pauline Pengelly has been involved in The World Of James Herriot since 1998, when the attraction was preparing for its 1999 opening. Now the centre’s management have thanked her for the decade and a half of dedicated service.

Managing director Ian Ashton said: “Pauline will be missed by all of the team at the World Of James Herriot and as her letter also mentions, the house has many stories to tell and still has the feeling of a family and happinessVolunteers like Pauline is one of our key assets because they are as passionate about the story of Alf Wight and share it enthusiastically with our visitors every day.”

Pauline, who first spotted a call for volunteers in her local newspaper, said she had enjoyed her 16 years as a volunteer, especially meeting the many enthusiastic American visitors, and hearing from young vets inspired by the Herriot stories.
