AN owl has been killed after someone broke into a cage at a York house.

Two other birds of prey were released from their cages during the break-in, at a house in Langholme Drive, off Boroughbridge Road.

The attack happened on the evening of Wednesday 22 October, but police released details only today.

PC Chris Storey, of York police, said: “This is a shocking act of cruelty against a defenceless bird.

“If you have any information about the person responsible for this act of cruelty, I urge you to come forward and contact the police straight away.”

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Someone broke into a cage at the property, where the owl was kept by its owner, before they killed the bird. They also released two other birds of prey from their cages."
