A MAN who brandished a samurai sword on the streets of Scarborough has been spared jail.

Elliot Bray, 25, of Ramshill Road, Scarborough, appeared before York Crown Court yesterday, after he was convicted by Scarborough Magistrates’ Court of affray and possession of a bladed article.

The court heard police were called to Ramshill Road at about 2.30am on June 15 by paramedics who were treating a woman who had been injured by a man wielding a samurai sword.

CCTV operators spotted Bray in a nearby alleyway where rachael Landin, prosecuting, said he was “shouting and pointing it at people”, and “put the blade to the neck of a male sitting in the alleyway”.

Police armed with TASERS and canine units were sent to the scene, and entered the flat, where they found blood and the victim - Bray’s partner - with a cut to her left cheek.

She refused to make a complaint against Bray, but he was charged with affray and possession of the sword in public.

Judge James Spencer, sentencing, said: “You have got to control yourself.

“I hope you know that because if you do not you get into trouble.

“I am going to order 100 hours unpaid work for the community, under a community order of 12 months.”
