HELMSLEY open-air swimming pool has had a successful season following major renovation work which saved the facility from closure.

The pool, which is one of only about 100 public outdoor pools still in use in the country, was in danger of closing last year.

However, due to the efforts of volunteers, donations and grant funding, phase one of a refurbishment project was completed in time for the summer.

Val Travis, one of the volunteers, said two years ago it became apparent that Helmsley pool was destined to be permanently closed unless the money could be found to fund a major refurbishment to the changing and administration block.

"The pool's concrete surround was badly cracked and subsiding, presenting a safety hazard and potential threat to the infrastructure of the wall," she added.

" At the time, it was obvious that we would not be able to raise enough money to complete all the works and a two phase plan was put together.

Val said thanks to grants from the North York Moors National Park Community fund, the Cooperative Community fund, the Jack Brunton Charitable Trust, community fund raising events and private donations along with the generosity of local businesses and the efforts of volunteers, they were able to complete Phase one – the restoration of the changing block, in time for opening in June this year.

" Feedback we have received was very positive with visitors pleased that the pool is being invested in and supported so well," she added.

"Other comments included what a great facility for locals and holiday makers it was and how fantastic the staff were,"

Val said thoughts were now turning to Phase Two which involved the excavation and resurfacing of the pool surrounds, replacing the grass areas with artificial grass and the construction of a small safe toddler play area.

"We aim to place a small solar panel on the roof to provide hot water to the outside showers," she added.

"Having received quotes for Phase Two we will need to raise in the region of £30,000."

Val said that in response to customer feedback they would be considering extending the opening period and widening the range of activities on offer.

"To achieve this we will need to enlarge our lifeguard team particularly as next year we will lose the services of two of our current team including Sam Wallis who has given brilliant service over several years," she added.

" Lifeguard training costs £250 and we are looking for business or individual sponsorship for four young people who would join the team in May/June 2015. We would also like an older semi-retired or retired person to join the team."
