A WOMAN who was shocked to learn that stray dogs have only one week to be claimed before they are put down has made it her mission to raise money for a local dog rescue charity.

Mandy Clark, who lives in Helperthorpe, spotted a lurcher near her home one day who she believes was dumped by travellers. After contacting Ryedale Dog Rescue she was told that not all dogs go on to be re-homed.

She said: “I didn’t realise that dogs only have seven days to be claimed before they are put to sleep. But when I found this lurcher and contacted Ryedale Dog Rescue it really showed what a different it makes to have that interference and re-home them.

“A lot of people don’t realise that dogs are being abandoned around them all the time.”

As an animal lover, Mandy decided she would hold an event to raise money for Ryedale Dog Rescue and has organised a two-course meal and an auction to be held at The Blue Bell Country Inn, Weaverthorpe on Monday, September 29.

Having already sold about 90 tickets the event looks likely to be a success and raise more than £1,000. Prizes up for grabs in the auction so far include a spa day at Raithwaite Hall for both owner and dog, a Jaguar car for the weekend and bed and breakfast at the Star Inn, Harome.

Mandy said: “I have been overwhelmed with the generosity of people and I have been astounded by the response we have had so far. We are hoping to raise a fair amount, at least over £1,000.”

Rosie Stephenson, of Ryedale Dog Rescue, said: “We are really excited about the event and Mandy has worked so hard to secure some really great lots for the auction.

“It will be a really great evening.” The event will start at about 7pm and tickets are £15 each. For more information, or to buy tickets, phone Mandy on 07815 865767.
