A MAJOR clean-up of one of the Yorkshire coast’s most popular holiday beaches, Reighton Sands, near Filey, is to be carried out by a newly-formed marine conservation group.

Scarborough Beach Keepers is teaming up with the Marine Conservation Society and Reighton Sands Holiday Park to tackle problems at the beauty spot later this month, said Shane Barker, operations officer at Scarborough Borough Council’s environmental services department.

“It is a sad fact that from various sources, 20,000 tons of waste finds its way into the North Sea every year,” he said.

“About 15 per cent of this washes back on our shores on the Yorkshire coast, and combined with beach litter has a detrimental effect on wildlife and the ecology of the beach.

“This affects water quality and public safety.

“There is also statistical evidence to support the fact that beach litter and marine waste are also having a detrimental effect on the tourist industry in the Scarborough council area.”

Now members of the new ranger group are to carry out a clean up at Reighton on Sunday, September 21.
