FORTY-ONE North Yorkshire charities will get extra money after a fund set up by a doctor from the county and an internet donation site joined forces.

The Peter Sowerby Foundation and Localgiving.com have launched a £12,000 fund.

Up until July 31 or until the fund is used, whichever is the sooner, any donations to any of the charities through the website of up to £20 will be doubled and monthly donations of up to £20 will be doubled for six months. Gift Aid is not counted in the £20 but is given to the charity.

The charities include: Sight Support Ryedale, Ryedale Folk Museum, Ryedale Carers Support, Next Steps Mental Health Resource Centre of Malton, Ryedale Voluntary Action, York Sea Cadets Corps, Old Malton War Memorial Hall, Ryedale Special Families, The Alan Bott Centre, York Carers Centre, Wigginton Grasshoppers FC and Whitby, Scarborough & Ryedale DAG.

Localgiving.com is a non-for-profit organisation aimed at making it easier for locallly based charities and community groups to raise money.

The foundation was set up by Dr Peter Sowerby, who co-wrote very successful computer software for an electronic medical record system for GPs when working at Egton Surgery, Egton, near Whitby.
