I regret the Government's refusal to support the French proposal to air-drop supplies to those suffering in the wake of the disaster in Burma.

Of course, it is right that diplomatic negotiations take place but, while bureaucrats talk, those who have been left destitute have nothing.

A few days' extra talking is frustrating for diplomats. For those who have nothing to eat, those extra days are the difference between survival and starvation. A thousand tonnes of food a day are required by the 1.5 million people who victims of this disaster.

We should be doing as the French suggest and dropping supplies by air. If we don't, by the time the Burmese authorities decide to allow people in, tens of thousands more people will have died.
