Let’s barricade the city centre
VEHICLES TO BE BANNED?: Micklegate in York, with Micklegate Bar in the background
VEHICLES TO BE BANNED?: Micklegate in York, with Micklegate Bar in the background

When the parking meters and traffic restrictions were introduced in Micklegate the local traders were concerned about the effect it would have on their businesses.

Since the introduction several have closed.

We now read that further plans will be considered to make Micklegate a pedestrian-only street (Footstreet focus of council review, The Press, May 6). What effect will this have?

Where will the traffic then go - via the station which, since the introduction of the new station working and extra traffic lights is a nightmare, or via Nunnery Lane and Skeldergate Bridge which for most of the day is congested?

How will the council make up the revenue lost from the parking meters in Micklegate?

It would not surprise me to see them increase parking charges elsewhere to make up for the loss.

Does the council not realise that if it puts all its eggs in one basket something will break?

Possibly they could check and see if the portcullis on Micklegate Bar still works.

Then they could cut the city off altogether, and the Clifton Moor and Monks Cross shopping centres would benefit even further.

AP Cox, Heath Close, Holgate, York.

WITH reference to the news that many more city centre streets could be closed to traffic.

The sad part of this is that the good motorists, who drive with respect for others, will suffer.

The bad motorists I have no time for; they spoil the concessions given by the city.

Taking these away is giving in to the minority that spoil it for others. It is normally the case these days.

Keith Chapman, St Benedict Road, Nunnery Lane, York.

Mr Cox Is correct why not go all the way and close York off to all vehicles buses included York will then die off all together the council will then have no problems with POLUTION or congestion York people will shop out of York and the Suitcase RATS can take york over and they are welcome to it, what has the city got for us NOTHING.
Why not pull the Minster down along with the Bar Walls and build council homes this would aslo close German Beck and its problems.
Great to know GALLOWAY IS OFF!!!!

Let Malton be a lesson to you all. before the by pass was built virtually all coastal traffic went through Malton causing 30-50 minute tailbacks somebank holidays. Now the town is like a ghost town very little tourist trade and half the pubs are closed down and many shops shut up and gone. York is heading that way fast-we are based on trade and if shoppers cant get in -or dont want to pay exorbitant parking fees-bye bye York.
