Micklegate reprieve

AFTER a long period of uncertainty, the news that Micklegate is to retain its post office will be welcomed not only by those in the immediate area, but by many residents and businesses in central York.

Its closure would have had a significant impact on the already over-busy post offices in Lendal and Colliergate, not to mention the difficulties it would have caused the numerous individuals, small businesses and voluntary organisations in Micklegate and the surrounding area who depend upon this branch.

The decision by the Post Office chairman restores one's faith in the power of protest, not only by councillors and the MP, but also by the thousands of local people who campaigned against this closure.

It is to be hoped that the reprieve will not sound the death knell of a branch elsewhere in the area.

Lesley Schatzberger, Jessie's Fund, Priory Street, York.
