Drastic plastic

I WAS delighted to see that York was ranked 54th travel hotspot in the world, and we should be proud of our city and the tourism it brings to the area.

I was also pleased to see that Plonkers and The Lowther have been allowed an area of Kings Staith to serve food and drink, as there are limited areas in York available for this.

Imagine my surprise when ordering a bottle of wine to find it served in plastic beakers, and the bottle decanted into a plastic container that looked as if it had come from the side of a hospital bed.

Why is it that in every village, town or city across Europe we can sit by the riverside or in the square and enjoy a bottle of wine served in the bottle, in real glasses, but in York - no!

Why do we allow such silly people to make our rules and regulations and make us a laughing stock? And if anyone mentions health and safety I will scream...

By the way, wouldn't it look much brighter and welcoming with a few nice umbrellas. But guess what - no, it's against the rules.

J M Brewin, Merchant Exchange, Bridge Street, York.
