Thanks, Gordon

I would like to thank Mr Brown on his last budget before becoming Prime Minister, on ending the ten per cent band for taxpayers.

I was retired medically from my work in 2005, and received a works pension, which increased slightly in 2008. With this and an increase in personal tax allowance, one would have thought one would be a bit better off - not so.

With the increase in pension taking away the tax allowances for 2008/2009, this left an amount to be taxed.

I received my statement stating the amount to be paid into my bank for April 2008, and to my horror my income tax had increased £20 per month - on top of the amount paid in 2007/2008. In fact, my tax had doubled.

This is really not on. Even members of the Labour Government have condemned the cessation of the ten per cent tax band. One hears of Mr Brown's shaky afterthoughts. He realises his mistake here, will try to help people aged between 60 and 64, but there is no bringing back the ten per cent band!

It is another prime example of getting extra income into the Exchequer, at certain taxpayers' expense.

Tom Mitchell, Mendip Close, Huntington, York.

I'm tired of the government taking a huge slab of money out of my wage every month. They seem to tax the poor to pay for the rich. We need to make the government aware that we are not happy with the way things are. We should have another march on London equivalent to the Jarrow Marches that took place in 1936.
