The L-plate rebels

ARE THE majority of driving schools breaking the law?

The rules regarding L-plates clearly state that when someone is teaching a pupil to drive, L-plates must be displayed in a conspicuous position on the front and rear of the car.

It doesn't state that the L' can be displayed within the advertising fixture on top of the car. That fixture is for advertising only.

It is also stated it is illegal for a non-learner to drive while displaying L-plates if the learner driver is not under instruction in the vehicle and yet, all the time, we see these driving school instructors displaying their advertising fixtures with the big red L' incorporated either within the name of the school or beside said name.

Either way, the L' is part of the advertisement and it would appear the car is being driven by a learner driver without proper L-plates attached, which is illegal. If the instructors are using their advertisement L' as L-plates, then surely the fixture should be removed when the pupil exits the vehicle and reattached when the next one enters.

Are driving schools exempt from the same rules as everyone else?

For goodness sake engage brain and look it up before opening gob!
Vehicles. Any vehicle driven by a learner MUST display red L plates. In Wales, either red D plates, red L plates, or both,
can be used. Plates MUST conform to legal specifications and MUST be clearly visible to others from in front of the vehicle and from behind. Plates should be removed or
covered when not being driven by a learner (except on driving school vehicles).

Excellent work, Bemused. How to out-pedant a pedant.

Although I've never had cause to look this up, I must say I've always assumed exemption to be the case - as a matter of logic.

I wondered what those four horsemen were doing.
