Not a high street
I AM writing in response to the recent article concerning the closure of the Oxfam shop in York Hospital.
Oxfam never grasped the fact that high street shops are bound to make a higher profit than one in a hospital, where the number of potential customers is limited and there is no passing trade.
Oxfam is, in fact, the third of "the array of shops" in the hospital to close. The first unit to go has been empty for nearly a year now.
It seems likely that the unrealistically high rents will have been a major factor in the demise of the three shops.
If the rent was halved, the profit at the Oxfam shop would have soared and this would have guaranteed maximum revenue. Oxfam would be content and the rent would provide the hospital with some regular income. As it is, a real treasure has been lost.
