WHILE I have every sympathy with Joe Doyle's children over their recent loss, I must agree with the council's action over payment of rent The Press, May 2).

The action taken is no different from if there had been a mortgage on the house or if it had been private property under rent. In fact, the council is the landlord, and rent or mortgage would have to be paid until the house was sold or given up.

If the council did not have such a system in place there would be no incentive for people to clear the property as quickly as possible and revenue would be lost.

I am fortunate to own my own house, but I presume that as a council-tax payer part of the tax is used to subsidise council property so we have to protect our interest.

We all know this.....so why did it need to be said?

...but lets kill one red herring. Council Taxpayers do not subsidise Council housing. The accounts are run entirely independently. If there is a deficit on a Council Housing account then it is other tenants who pick up the bill.

Hear hear. They are not the only moaners who get their undeserving gripe splashed across the pages of the press, when common sense says the sensible solution should be exactly what they are complaining against!
