Booze nightmare

THE report by student Heledd Williams describing a typical girls' night-out speaks volumes (The Press, April 29).

What she doesn't add is the nightmare lives "suffered" - yes, that's the word - by neighbours of these boozed-up, screeching banshees Why don't the "higher ups" at the university do something about it? Because we all know the money-grabbing landlords won't.

A Myers, Hull Road, York.

Amen to that. Who defines this as "fun"? Those of us who enjoy ourselves peaceably should speak up more - why on earth should yobettes ruin other peoples' lives and get away with it's-only-a-laugh-ge
rralife. We have lives, and would prefer to get on with enjoying them without annoying everyone in earshot.

I'd just like to point out though that some of the women I know are far worse than any students. Women in their 20s who can drink far more due to earning money (rather than students, who seem to always get the blame). I defy any of you to live on the £4k - £5k per year that students get, there's no physical way they can afford to get constantly wasted. Unlike a lot of the people I know who didn't go to university but spend most of their time slumped outside takeaways on a Saturday night. Stop giving the students so much grief, certain residents are just as bad if not worse. Most of the idiots on a weekend binge drink are not students.

The original article referred to girls' nights out. If the antisocial behaviour in question takes place away from both the campus and the perpetrators' homes, then it's none of the university's or their landlords' business.

Nice one Guy. Too many sanctimonious old farts on this site.

Pete: and proud to be one, sir. No apologies whatever for hoping to have a peaceful life without nightly drunken scenes. Think about it next time you step around (or in) some vomit in Micklegate.

This isn't an issue of boisterous twentysomethings versus the Victor Meldrew brigade, but a case of the punishment fitting the crime. If someone throws up all over Micklegate, that is a summary public order offence which is tried by magistrates and punishable (usually) by a fine, ASBO or community service. I agree with the sentiment of the letter, that such offences should be punished more consistently and that we shouldn't just accept drunk and disorderly behaviour as being normal. It's turned the southern end of Bootham into a no-go area in the late evenings, and I'm tired of it. But drunk and disorderly behaviour in public and outside working hours is nothing to do with an employer (unless they can show, convincingly, that they've been brought into disrepute), university or landlord. Mr. Myers' comment is analogous to saying 'The driving standards on British motorways are dreadful - why isn't the Civil Aviation Authority doing something about it?'.

Guy. Your comparison is not quite in conntext what A Myers suggests. He/she implies that the "higher ups" at the university should have total control over the students. These people have reached their majority and shouldn't be subject to such "control freak" regime. The students, like all in society, should behave within the law, and be called to account by the beak when they don't.
I said "old farts" because I'm fed-up with the type that believes that their way, the old way, is right. For God sake, they've retired and stopped contributing. The world changeth. Let the young get on with it and make their world. Yes, they'll make mistakes, they/we always did.
