I AM writing to thank the many people in Fulford and beyond for their energy and stamina in helping us to oppose the development at Connaught Court (Care flats scheme thrown out, The Press. June 27).

I am sure that, like us, they were all delighted that the planning application was unanimously turned down.

Thirty-five people turned out in torrential rain to attend the site meeting before the decision. Many more attended our campaign meetings and rallies over the three years since the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution submitted its first application. We have had countless offers of help from volunteers keen to do their bit.

Coun Keith Aspden and Coun Andy d'Agorne deserve special thanks for their support. But we would also like to thank the members of the planning committee, who so clearly saw the damage that the proposed development would cause to Fulford and to the wonderful parkland at Connaught Court.

Constance Smith (for Fulford Friends), St Oswald's Road, York.
