ONE of York’s biggest nightclubs is being given a new life as a dual purpose venue – selling coffee and food by day as well as alcohol by night.

Bar Salvation in Rougier Street, which will be re-named Society Lounge & Bar, will officially reopen on the day of the Queen’s visit to York next month.

And the revamped venue is hoping for a very special guest at its reopening, with the monarch invited to call in for a coffee while on her way to the Minster to distribute Maundy Money.

Spokesman Daniel Buy said the eight-year-old daughter of director Russ Browns had sent a letter to the Queen, requesting she visits the opening of her “daddy’s new coffee bar”.

He said Society would provide one of the best viewing points in town for people wanting to catch a glimpse of the Queen if she passed down George Hudson Street and Rougier Street after arriving at the city through Micklegate Bar. “There is a first-floor viewing gallery and plenty of space on the street outside,” he said.

“Society will be fully involved in the celebrations with bunting and flags aplenty for the big visit.

“The party is set to continue into the early hours.”

He said Society was an active part of City of York Council’s recently-formed Micklegate Action Group, and was keen to improve the perception and experience of the Micklegate Quarter.

“We feel by providing a new daytime experience for local office workers, commuters and tourists, the area will certainly benefit,” he said.

“The newly fitted bar is relaxing, informal and contemporary in its stylings.

“It is a great place to get away from the hustle, bustle of work and the busy street to truly relax and take a break.”

He said the daytime focus was fresh coffee with a fully trained barista service, in conjunction with a selection of homemade food products consisting of sandwiches, salads, paninis, pastries, biscuits and cakes.
