Victorian pier fails to find buyer
8:48am Sunday 3rd February 2013 in National News © Press Association 2013
A Victorian-era pleasure pier put up for auction with a guide price of £400,000 has failed to find a buyer.
Bids at Saturday night's sale for Cleethorpes Pier in North East Lincolnshire reached £390,000 but did not meet an undisclosed reserve price, Lincoln-based Swindells Auctioneers said.
But the firm is still hopeful that a sale of the 335-ft pier, which is home to a bar and restaurant, can be arranged in the coming weeks.
Auctioneer Edward Swindells said: "I am disappointed that it didn't find a customer in the room this evening.
"It would have been nice to get it sold under the hammer but I'm confident that in the next 10 to 14 days one of the bidders will come forward and try to strike a deal."
