June Whitfield has spent more than half a century on our television screens - but the veteran actress has revealed she still fears each acting job she gets could be her last.

Whitfield has starred alongside some of the acting greats of the past 50 years, including Frankie Howerd and Benny Hill.

And her hilarious spell as Eddie's slightly batty mother in Absolutely Fabulous won her a place in the hearts of another generation of television viewers.

But the 88-year-old told the Sunday Express S magazine she is still haunted by the fear that work could dry up.

She said: "I've never mapped anything out. Like all actors, after every job I think 'Well, that's the last one and I'd better think about doing something else'.

"But I've been so very lucky and I've managed to keep going for a long time. It's just the way the cookie crumbles and it's crumbled pretty well for me. I appreciate it and I realise how lucky I am."

She shows no sign of slowing down, having revealed that she recently enlisted the help of a personal trainer to keep her in shape.

She said: "He puts me through my paces but it's not strenuous stuff - I'm just trying to keep the parts moving."

The octogenarian added that she is not thinking about retirement just yet: "I love working. It gives you a reason to get up in the morning."
