A NEW memorial to RAF ground staff killed during the Second World War has been unveiled at a North Yorkshire airbase.

The stone has been placed at RAF Linton-on-Ouse, which was attacked by the Luftwaffe on a number of occasions during the war. During one attack, overnight on May 11, 1941, 13 RAF personnel were killed, including Group Captain Frederick Frank Garroway OBE - the station commander who had been in his post for only one day.

Group Captain Garroway joined other staff to fight a fire caused by a German bomb, when he and others were killed by another falling bomb.

The names of all 13 have been inscribed on the stone, which is in front of Station Headquarters, close to where Group Captain Garroway was killed. Funds for the memorial - the stone for which was donated by Rand & Asquith - were raised by family members of those killed in the raid.
