A ROMAN style dinner is to be held in York to reveal the city’s classical past.

The one-off talk and dinner will be held at the National Trust Treasurer’s House near to Roman remains including the nearby former baths and gymnasium.

The evening will start in the Great Hall with local historian Graham Harris sharing the origins of the Roman bathhouse, and some of the little-known tunnels, passages and structures that lie beneath York.

Afterwards, guests will descend to the cellar and its subterranean dining area for a Roman-themed, two-course banquet.

The event is being held as part of the classically-themed Big City Read held by Explore York Libraries and Archives.

Fiona Williams, chief executive of Explore York, said: “The Big City Read is one of those great events that give huge scope to bring people together in many different ways, and this dinner is a great example.Whether you’re into tasting Roman cuisine, exploring one of York’s great houses, broadening your classical horizons or are a passionate reader, This ticks all those boxes and promises to be a fantastic evening.”

York’s Secret Fourth Century Leisure Complex will be held on Saturday at 6pm.

Tickets cost £25 and can be booked at any Explore York Library or by calling 01904 552651.
