A NEW community group has been formed in a part of York undergoing massive redevelopment.

A meeting was held on Saturday at St Saviourgate when the Hungate Community Trust was retired and a new group - called the Hungate Community Development Trust (HCDT) - was established.

The new body aims to give a voice to the community’s hopes for the area, which once completely redeveloped will contain up to 720 new homes, plus businesses, on the land inside the city walls.

Gordon Campbell-Thomas, newly elected chairman of HCDT, said: “We are not leaving the past behind, but we are forging ahead with new vigour to form partnerships with other organisations to deliver a variety of projects that will benefit not just the people of Hungate, but in the wider York area.

“We are using models of successful community development trusts around the country as our template, but we will shape the new HCDT to meet the needs of York people.”

He said members hope the HCDT will boost jobs with social and community enterprises at Hungate, and are planning a series of meetings to talk about ideas for the site and York more widely.
