CREATIVE youngsters will help transform a youth centre with vibrant artwork when they are given the chance to work with professional artists this autumn.

Children associated with the Looked After Children support centre, at York’s Hamilton House, are to work with the young people’s charity, Inspired Youth, and City of York Council.

The young people, aged between 11 and 16 years old, will create a series of positive, lasting visuals to decorate the walls of the building, form positive welcoming statements for each room and create a film about children using the service.

Helen Healey, Looked After Children support manager, said: “The young people in our care have had a tough start in life and it’s vitally important that they have a safe, welcoming place in which to meet their birth families under supervision and bond with their foster carers and support team.

“We want to ensure that we use their experiences to improve and shape the way we support young people in foster care in the future.”

Cllr Janet Looker, cabinet member for Education, Children and Young People, added: “I’m hugely excited by this project and the opportunities it will bring, not just for the young people involved, but for all our Looked After Children and the teams who work with them.”
