OFFICERS from North Yorkshire Police will attend a meeting of world leaders later this year.

Up to 60 world leaders, including David Cameron, Barack Obama, Angela Merkel, Francois Hollande, will visit Newport, Wales in September for the first NATO summit in the UK since 1990.

The leaders will address issues which threaten the national security of countries within NATO, including the situation in Ukraine, terrorism and cyber attacks, and police from forces around the country – including some from North Yorkshire Police – will be sent to ensure the highest security surrounds the event.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police only said: “North Yorkshire Police will be providing mutual aid to the NATO summit, however, details, including the number of officers, has yet to be finalised.”

The Press has also confirmed this week that officers from North Yorkshire Police will be sent to Glasgow later this month to provide support to local officers at the Commonwealth Games.

Deputy Chief Constable Steve Allen, director of security for the Games, said: “English and Welsh forces are providing specialist mutual aid to assist the safety and security operation. Their assistance will reinforce the specialist support already present within Police Scotland and we look forward to welcoming them.”

DCC Allen said he could not comment on specific numbers of officers “for operational reasons”, but The Press understands understands the officers would come from specific and specialist teams, rather than rank-and-file frontline officers.
