CITY councillors are to debate the impact of benefit changes on some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.

Recent benefit changes have resulted in payments previously made either being reduced or withdrawn altogether, leaving many without the proper support they need, and now Thursday’s full council meeting is to debate a motion on the topic.

Labour’s Cllr Janet Looker, cabinet member for education, children and young people’s services, will tell councillors that changes which have removed the extra support element of housing benefit for people suffering with poor mental health, alcoholism and other problems, should be reviewed by the government.

The motion will call for action to review the roll out of Universal Credit, the implementation of Personal Independence Payments (PIPs) and difficulties with the delays in the processing of Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) claims.
