NEW rules to stop people drinking on the streets of York have been brought in this week.
The extended Alcohol Restriction Zone was launched by City of York Council and North Yorkshire Police, making it an offence to carry on drinking within the city walls and the station when asked to stop by a police officer, PCSO or BTP officer.
Officers and council officials have the power to seize alcohol supplies, and individuals who refuse to comply face prosecution.
Councillor Tracey Simpson-Laing, Cabinet Member for Housing and Safer Communities at the council, said: “This new ARZ gives a very clear message that we welcome those who wish to enjoy the best of York, but not those intent on anti-social behaviour that spoils others’ pleasure.”
