VOLUNTEERS joined gardeners at a North Yorkshire stately home to help create a display with thousands of snowdrops.

The volunteers, from Aviva in York, teamed up with the staff of Nunnington Hall to lift, divide and transplant thousands of the bulbs, which would improve next year's display.

Maria Mahon is a gardener at Nunnington Hall and Rievaulx Terrace, and said the help meant much more could be done to improve the winter display for visitors.

She said: “We are delighted that Aviva have chosen to support the work of one of their local National Trust properties by offering to help out in the gardens for a day as part of their local community volunteering programme."

Richard Romaniak, from Aviva, said: “We are really pleased to have this opportunity to assist Nunnington Hall in this endeavour.

"We think that volunteering is a really good way to play a positive leadership role in improving the communities in which we are in. In addition to this we believe that volunteering events such as this one can help with our individuals’ personal development and be rewarding, both personally and professionally.

Nunnington Hall is open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm and Mondays in school holidays. For more information phone 01439 748283 or visit nationaltrust.org.uk/nunningtonhall
