The Alzheimer’s Society at New Earswick Indoor Bowling Centre is encouraging people to try their hand at boccia.
The Paralympic sport is similar to indoor bowling but easier to manage for people with limited mobility by using lighter bowling bowls.
It can also be played while sitting down.
York Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Support Worker Penny Gregg said: “Activity groups can make a huge difference to people’s sense of wellbeing and activities like boccia also help keep people physically fit and active.
“The sessions enable people with dementia to meet other people in a similar situation whilst also having fun and trying out new things.”
Over the last few months the group has been joined by sixth-form pupils from Huntington School who have joined the Boccia sessions as part of their personal development programme.
