THE latest show from the York Dungeon looks at life under the reign of Henry VIII.

The Tyrannical Tudors show, which opened yesterday (FRI), brings to life the experience of being a peasant in the wrong part of York, led by John Thomas - the partly earless 16th Century ex-launderer of monks' habits.

Beggars in certain areas of York could expect to be whipped, lose part of an ear, or be sentenced to death after Yorkshire's rebellion during Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries - which included St Mary's Abbey in York.

Daniel James Elmes is the actor playing John Thomas in the new show, and said he was excited about the new role.

He said: “The character I play hasn’t lost his sense of humour, despite great adversity, and we know visitors will love this new show. We want them to feel as if they’re back in 1541 with us, but they’re going to laugh a lot, too.”

The new 75-minute tour includes an entirely new floor of the Dungeon dedicated to the Tudors, and also includes storytelling and audience interaction.

Tickets can be pre-booked for the Easter holidays, with a saving of £5.90 on normal prices. For more information go to thedungeons.com/york
