RIVAL Euro election candidates last night set up a “field hospital” next to the Liberal Democrat conference base in York – saying they wanted to offer comfort to “betrayed voters”.

The stunt at Fishergate Bar, compete with operating tables, bandages, first aid kits and medics in white coats, was staged by the Green Party, who also said it would provide “much-needed therapy to any broken-hearted Lib Dems”.

Denise Craghill, who chairs York’s Green Party and is standing as a Euro candidate, said her party was committed to free access to higher education while the Lib Dems had broken their pledges on tuition fees and were “propping up a coalition destroying public services”.

Andrew Cooper, the party’s lead Yorkshire candidate in May’s elections, said the field hospital meant “casualties of the coalition” could meet politicians opposed to austerity measures.
