Power lines ‘turned invisible’ inquest hears

A CORONER has called for power lines in low-flying zones to have high-visibility markings following the death of two Army helicopter pilots.

Warrant Officer Class 2 Vince Hussell, of Marton-le-Moor, near Ripon, was instructing 24-year-old Lieutenant Mark Reynolds, of Nottinghamshire, when their helicopter hit 33,000-volt power lines in Devon in May 2008.

A narrative verdict was recorded into their deaths at an inquest in Exeter, which heard copper lines had oxidized and turned green, making them invisible against a valley backdrop.

Coroner Dr Elizabeth Earland recommended better contact between the military and utility companies.
