Ale sales to aid cathedral repairs

CHURCH leaders in North Yorkshire are praying for drier weather ahead of their annual beer festival which is designed to help fund urgent repairs to a historic cathedral.

Breweries from across Yorkshire are taking part in the Ripon Cathedral festival on May Day Bank Holiday Monday, in the grounds of the church, with money raised going towards its repairs and renewals fund.

The drive is aiming to raise £120,000 to maintain the cathedral’s crumbling stonework and its 12th century gargoyles, as well as funding an upgrade to its computer system. The festival will feature 30 local ales as well as food and live music.
