TRANSPORT bosses have allowed brown tourist signs directing people to a North Yorkshire town to be kept at the side of the A1.
However transport minister Mike Penning has said the Government will be unable to fund the additional signs for Masham and Wensleydale, with Skipton and Ripon MP Julian Smith saying he is now forming a “community task force” to work with the Highways Agency to secure the money for them.
Businesses in the town feared the signs would be permanently removed because of work on upgrading the A1 and Mr Smith said: “Directing tourists to Masham and Wensleydale is vital for the town and the area’s economy, and I am determined that when the upgrade opens later this year, we will have our new signs in place.”
