Faster internet for 39,000 homes

Nearly 39,000 more homes and businesses in North and East Yorkshire now have access to faster broadband, BT has announced.

Haxby, Stamford Bridge, Pickering, Filey, Ripon, Tadcaster and Bedale are the latest communities to get BT’s next generation broadband service.

It is already available in more than 20 locations including York, Harrogate, Northallerton, Scarborough and Selby.

John Anderson, BT’s regional director for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “In these challenging economic times, faster broadband can help businesses become more competitive, find new customers and work more flexibly as well as greatly improving the online services available to families, homeworkers and other internet users.”

But still they are not installing it at Clitfon Moor, the place with the second highest concentration of businesses in York after the City Centre, why?????

No sign of installing it in my bit of Heworth either. About ten years ago fibre got laid about 200 yards away, but none of the people running the network have laid an inch since as far as I can tell.

Good news! Be even better when they roll out faster broadband to smaller communities. Or even broadband at all...

Its also lacking in certain areas around foss islands road & walmgate. The exchange shows as being enabled but cabling hasn't been run into all properties. Doesn't seem to matter who you ask you don't get any information about when these blank spots will be filled!!

also not available at present in Acomb.

Why is everyone saying about cabling not being run to properties? The fibre cabling that was laid a few years ago is for the Virgin network (what was Cable & Wireless) As far as I was aware the speed update mentioned in the article (BT Infinity) is all at the exchange level then uses the normal phone cables. If you're on the normal BT broadband then you won't automatically get any upgrade unless you switch to the faster service. as to the person in Heworth, and possibly the Foss Islands/Walmgate areas, you may be served by the Melrosegate exchange, as I am, which is due to be upgraded later this year according to the BT website

Any chance of an upgrade to Acomb? Believe it or not that's where Poppleton gets it's copper cable connection from!

JorvickUK is correct. Acomb BT Exchange, nearly 3 miles distant from Poppleton, can only provide a maximum 1mb speed to Poppleton. BT should stop bragging and actually provide the service they talk so much about.

Most of the copper cable previously laid has been nicked by the non-fee paying members of the caravan club
