A SAFETY scheme in Harrogate saw police and council officers check 21 taxis in one night.
North Yorkshire Police worked with Harrogate borough council and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, to carry out safety checks on private hire and hackney carriages on Friday.
Five taxis received immediate prohibition orders, taking them off the road for brakes, tyres and transmission. Another had seven days to sort out defects. Four more had advisory notices.
Traffic Sergeant Andrew Morton said: “Members of the public have a right to expect that the taxis they use are safe and roadworthy and that the drivers are properly licensed.
I am disappointed. Five defects were so serious taxi plates were suspended.” Two fixed penalty tickets were issued.
