A NORTH Yorkshire chapel has received a £5,000 grant for repairs and refurbishments.

Wesley Chapel, in Harrogate, has got the cash from the National Churches Trust.

The Grade II-listed Wesley Chapel dates from 1862, and although it was extensively refurbished for its centenary in 1962 and again in 1994, the structure means it is no longer suitable for elderly members of the congregation.

The new grant will help fund the removal of downstairs pews, the creation of a level floor and the redesign of some existing rooms and the kitchen, giving the community full use of the chapel space and meaning it can be opened to community groups during the week. The Trust has awarded a total of £330,000 to 21 churches and chapels across England, Scotland and Wales.
