A METHODIST Minister is planning to abseil down Ripon Cathedral to help in the global fight against poverty.
The Reverend Stephen Burgess, chair of the methodist church’s York & Hull district, has recently joined the cathedral team as an ecumenical canon.
As a long-term supporter of Christian Aid, he was asked to demonstrate his backing for the charity by abseiling down the cathedral tower on Saturday, July 12 and couldn’t think of a good reason to say no!
“What better way to mark my recent installation as an Ecumenical Canon of Ripon Cathedral than to throw myself off its roof?
“I hope that people may even be prepared to pay to witness my dignity-challenging descent in support of such a worthwhile cause.”
He said he hoped health and safety regulations would allow him to do the abseil wearing his red canon’s cassock.
