YEARS of training young footballers and sports enthusiasts has been rewarded for Kirkbymoorside’s Paul Magson, who has been named the town’s Citizen of the Year.

Paul, 43, received his vellum scroll from town mayor, Coun Chris Dowie, at last week’s annual town assembly at the Memorial Hall when he was given a big round of applause by youngsters and residents for his work.

Paul, an oil burner service engineer, has been involved with Kirkbymoorside Sportsfield and Social Club since he was at school. Among his achievements has been to set up young people’s teams with the result that there are now 11 teams of juniors – nine boys and two girls.

Among his roles is overseeing coaches of the various sports at the ground, including tennis, squash, bowls and cricket, as well as being a leading member of the sportsfield committee.

“I do it for the kids,” he said.

Coun Dowie said: “Paul has done a great job over many years, not only coaching young people but fundraising and marking out the pitches.”

She told him: “You have shown great integrity, determination and enthusiasm as head coach and you are a wonderful ambassador for the town and an inspiration to our young people.”
