A 90-YEAR-OLD man from Ampleforth was killed in a two-vehicle crash on the A168 road between Northallerton and Thirsk this morning (January 5).

The crash happened at Thornton-le-Street, near Thirsk at 9.35am.

The man, who was driving a Peugeot 306, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say it is understood he overtook a hay wagon while heading towards Northallerton and collided with a blue Vauxhall Meriva, half-a-mile north of Thornton-le-Street.

The driver of the Vauxhall, a 29-year-old woman from Northallerton, was airlifted to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough by the Great North Air Ambulance along with one of her sons, aged six. The woman has a broken sternum.

Her other son aged eight was taken to the same hospital by road ambulance.

Both boys suffered minor cuts and bruises.

The A168 was closed in both directions.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision and would like to hear from anyone who has not yet spoken to the police. Call 101 and ask for Traffic Sergeant Clare Sawyer or Thirsk Roads Policing Group.
