STUDENTS from Northallerton College have taken part in a national initiative to get young people involved with local councils.

Councillors and officers from Hambleton District Council worked with the students as part of Local Democracy Week, talking about who is responsible for which local services, and debating the £500,000 budget, and building their own parliamentary cabinet.

Cllr Bridget Fortune said: “We all recognise that we have to inspire and encourage young people to become involved in their local communities.

“The Local Democracy Campaign aims to raise young people’s awareness of how local councils operate and tell them about the opportunities available for taking part in decision-making at local level.

“As a result, we hope to have drawn their attention to how them taking part in local affairs is crucial in maintaining effective local democracy.”
