ARCHAEOLOGY workshops will take place in Thornton-le-Street next month to give budding archaeologists the chance to boost their skills.

The English Heritage-run session will take place on Saturday, September 20, from 10am to 3pm and is intended to stimulate research into the archaeology of the county.

It will be conducted by Dave MacLeod, operational manager, and Dave Knight, investigator, of the York-based Aerial Investigation and Mapping Section.

Each year, hundreds of previously unknown sites are discovered through the aerial reconnaissance programme and specialist staff identify even more through the analysis of features visible on existing photographs.

The workshop will be a mix of theory and practice.

Numbers are limited so places must be booked in advance for each workshop, at a cost of £20 per person.

Payment should be made out to English Heritage and posted to John Sheehan at 4 Arden Mews, Northallerton, North Yorkshire DL6 1EN.

An additional charge of £2 will be made on the day to cover accommodation and refreshment costs.
