ONE of North Yorkshire’s grandest stately homes has begun its new role as a wedding venue.

Until now, Sir John and Lady Ropner only allowed family marriage ceremonies to be held at their Thorp Perrow home, near Bedale, but have now launched it as a venue for public weddings.

More than 150 representatives from North Yorkshire’s wedding industry attended the official launch, which doubled as the Brides Up North Christmas party, at Thorp Perrow, which is best known for its 85-acre arboretum.

Clive Wilkinson, who runs Catterick-based CWC Malings Ltd – which has catering rights for weddings and other functions at the stately home – said: “It is a unique venue and until now, because it was a private home, it was one of the best-kept secrets in North Yorkshire.”
