IT was a case of “uke can make a great sound” when pupils from schools across North Yorkshire took part in a concert designed to help them with their transition to secondary school.

The 75 children, from seven primary schools, took part in the event at Boroughbridge High School. The event was organised by teacher Diane Fleming, from St Peter’s CE Primary School in Harrogate and it helped raise the profile of the ukulele for children.

The instrument – made famous by George Formby and enjoyed by former Beatle George Harrison – has seen a surge in popularity. Ms Fleming said the ukulele made an ideal instrument for youngsters. “I started teaching ukulele at my school and found they could pick up so much in just an hour-and-a-half. So we continued from there,” she said.

“The instruments are just so nice for the children to play. I love them because the fret board is small enough for their little fingers.”

The children were accompanied by a swing band from the high school.
