PUPILS at a school in York donned celebratory shirts in anticipation of the biggest sporting event of the year.
The youngsters at St Aelred’s RC Primary School also built an eight-foot tall mascot, named Fred, to take along to see the Olympic Torch when it arrives in York in June.
Helena Towse, a teacher at the school, said: “The whole school was involved in creating the giant puppet.
“We’ll be there, along with 20 others from schools around York, to take part in a competition and activities with the puppets, before the torch arrives.”
The pupils also designed and made their own Games T-shirts for the occasion, which feature the Olympic rings and the school’s motto.
Helena said: “We’ve created banners for the event, and Year Six have all been donated T-shirts by Sainsbury’s, which feature the school’s motto ‘Working Together’.
“We’re all very excited about it, and we want to thank everyone in our community and school who have helped out.”
